Personal Development: Seven Principles of Hermeticism

A beach wtih clear and blue water. people swimming, a boat, and a person walking in the waves on shore.

Personal Development is a long term process of becoming a better person than you were the day before. It takes a lifetime of work, practice, dedication, and growth. Working on oneself isn’t easy. It takes a strong and determined person to overcome fears, difficulties, and live a happy life. Even when you feel like you failed you still need the strength and perseverance to keep going.

I once took a course at Landmark. They told me “There is nothing wrong with you, shit is just in the way.” That stuck with me. We are all perfect beings with crap in the way. Personal development is a way to get rid of that shit. Some people are so deep in their shit (ego) that they can’t see a way out. I find that when this is the case, it takes a lot of willpower and determination to dig deep and clean yourself of all the stuff holding you back. Some people prefer to sit in their stuff because it is easier or some other reason only they know. It is okay because not everyone is meant to evolve into a higher state of consciousness.

Seven Principles of Hermeticism

To understand this deeper, we need to understand the 7 principles of Hermeticism. I attended a school for Hermetic Philosophy for a few years. (I hope to return again soon.) The school opened my eyes to the beginning of why things are the way they are. I have so much more to learn, but what I have learned I want to share with you.

You can read about where Hermeticism started in The Kybalion. Not only does the book tell you the origin, but it also goes into detail the 7 Principles. It is a really good read.

I want to briefly take you through the 7 Principles of Hermeticism. Understanding these are the beginning. At least, they were for me. There are some principles that I understand more than others. I still don’t fully grasp any of them. To fully understand these principles takes time, experience, and comprehension. Since I am not a master, there is more to be understood and learned.

Principle One: Mentalism

“All is mind.” —The Kybalion.

Everything is mental, whether it is energy, power, or matter. It all begins in the mind. In order to master life, you have to master your mental state. Elevate your energy to a higher way of thinking. Everything that happens in your conscious and unconscious mind affects what is around you. This explains why some people have things and others do not. I know for me mentally, I do not attract wealth in terms of money because of my mental thoughts. The more I work towards transmuting my mental thoughts the more I receive in the areas I lack.

Principle Two: Correspondence

“As above, so below; as below, so above.”—The Kybalion.

This principle is one of the most important. It can help you understand that there are different levels of truth and that the Universe is grander than we imagine. There is an unknown part of life that we have yet to see. The principle of correspondence shows us that what is above, so below and what is below, so above. So what is here on earth, there is in another plane in the Universe.

What we do affects the other planes and vis versa. This is one of the principles that I struggle to understand deeply. It goes much deeper than my current understanding. And because I have such little understanding of this, I don’t want to elaborate more.

Principle Three: Vibration

“Nothing rests; everything moves; everything vibrates.”—The Kybalion.

Everything has vibrations, whether it be a low or high vibration. The universe vibrations, animals and things vibrate. Some at a higher level and some at a lower level. What we eat has a vibration, so when we consume food we take on that vibration. Same with smoking and drinking. Ever notice that after a night of drinking you feel low and depressed? That is because your vibration was lowered by the alcohol. There are people who are more sensitive to vibrations and energies than others. This allows some people to perceive how things feel more deeply.

There are certain foods I can not eat or need to eat in small quantities. There are certain places I can only go for short periods of time. Certain people who make me want to run the other way. Of course, there are higher vibrating people, places, and things as well. All of which I can be felt if the person is conscious of the energies around them

Principle Four: Polarity

“Everything is Dual; everything has poles; everything has its pair of opposites; like and unlike are the same; opposites are identical in nature, but different in degree; extremes meet; all truths are but half‑truths; all paradoxes may be reconciled.”—The Kybalion.

The statement above describes polarity perfectly. Everything has an opposite. Death and Life. Happy and Sad. Up and Down. You can’t have one without the other. This allows us to see the truths. We couldn’t understand happiness without pain and sadness. We couldn’t understand love without hate. Life without Death.

Principle Five: Rhythm

“Everything flows, out and in; everything has its tides; all things rise and fall; the pendulum‑swing manifests in everything; the measure of the swing to the right is the measure of the swing to the left; rhythm compensates.”—The Kybalion.

The pendulum is always swinging from left to right. We can move up the pendulum so that we aren’t as affected by it’s sway. Eventually being above it, looking down not affected at all. Same with the changing of the tides. We could be in the ocean on a huge boat where we are less affected by the tides or a smaller boat being affected more. Eventually, being on the shore just watching the tides change.

When we move to the left, there is always a reaction to move us to the right. Same with the changing of the tides. Rhythm is always moving and ever-changing. Think of a woman’s monthly cycle. It is always moving from creating new to getting rid of the old. It is the rhythm of life.

Principle Six: Cause and Effect

“Every Cause has its Effect; every Effect has its Cause; everything happens according to Law; Chance is but a name for Law not 16 recognized; there are many planes of causation, but nothing escapes the Law.”—The Kybalion.

This is something we all learned in school. You do something and something happens. You throw a stone and the water moves. The cause is the stone being thrown. The effect is water moving. It happens in everything. You change your mindset and something pushes back on you. You do something good (expecting nothing in return) and something good comes back to you. What we do on this plane of existence, affects another plane of existence. The Universe is connected to all, so our energies around things affect the universe.

Principle Seven: Gender

“Gender is in everything; everything has its Masculine and Feminine Principles; Gender manifests on all planes.”—The Kybalion.

This is one of the principles that I don’t have a deep understanding of. I know that things have a feminine and masculine portion to them. I know that in the physical world it is what we call our “sex”. I know on other planes in the Universe it doesn’t have a form. That is really all I understand. So I don’t want to go into more detail.

Hermetic Books

If you want to learn more, there are a few books written on hermeticism available today. You can also reach out to The Institute for Hermetic Philosophy. The Institute has schools in NYC, Chile, Venezuela, and Russia to name a few. The NYC branch has monthly seminars you can attend without becoming a member. If you are interested, I recommend attending the seminars and reading the books to make sure it is something for you.

Victim to Victor: The Choice is Yours

A few weeks ago, I wrote a blog about identifying victim mentality. Here is the second part… Victim to Victor!

We all have a choice on how we want to live our lives. We learn how to be victims or victors from our parents and close family when we are young. If you are around people who play the victim, you will play the victim yourself. Same goes for being the victor.

Even if we learned something as a child we can…

WE CAN choose HOW WE WANT TO LIVE!

The first step is choosing to live a different life. To go from victim to victor, we need to work and learn a new way of being.  It takes time and patience. It took me years to get to the victor mentality I now have. Don’t give up.

Here are a few ways to turn your life into one of a victor.

  1. Motivating yourself and others

Motivation is a huge positive mindset adjustment for people who play the victim. Motivating yourself and others is a positive and encouraging things to do. It requires a certain mindset to authentically motivate others. There are so many people that have a negative aspect when motivating others to achieve their goals or live the life they want. When you learn to positively motivate others it changes how you see life.

My way of motivating people now is completely different than it was 2 months ago or even 6 years ago. I am constantly learning new ways to motivate people in the best possible way. As I look back on how it has changed, I see how I play the victim less and less.

  1. Being impeccable with our values and promises

Being impeccable with our values and promises, we begn to distance ourselves from the victim mentality to the victor mentality. This happens because, in order to be impeccable with our values and promises, we have to own the mistakes me make. For me, being honest is a value that is important to me. If I find myself not being honest, I own up to that and not blame others, moving from victim to victor. I take control of my actions. Same with goes for breaking rules. If I break rules at my job, it is no one’s fault but mine. So when I become impeccable with myself, I own myself. There is no room to blame others.

It is difficult to do. It is worth doing being you gain so many other valuable traits that make the difficult well worth the effort. If you want more on this reading “The four agreements” by Don Miguel Ruiz is perfect for you!

  1. Overcoming fears and obstacles with a positive and grateful mindset

Some look at fears with a negative mindset. This negativity creates a breeding ground for the victim mentality. When one is grateful for all obstacles they are able to see the greatness within themselves as well as others.  Allowing you to be the victor in many ways. I found this the quickest way to overcome the victim mentality. If these suggestions are difficult and daunting to you, this one is my favorite and most life-changing tool.

In the last 2 years, I have learned how being grateful and positive even in hard times can change my way of thinking in drastic ways. I am loving the energy and feelings when placed in certain situations now.  Try this for 3 months and see the transformation!

  1. Gaining new knowledge

Reading books, Ted Talks, or attending personal development events is a great way to open your mind to another way of being. Using what we learn in the books, Ted Talks, and events give us access to tools we can use to learn. Learning from our experiences and being open to a new way of living or seeing life can allow us to put ourselves in other’s shoes. Thus opening our minds to the victor mentality rather than staying the victim.

Search for books, Ted Talks, and events that are for personal development for the next 6 months. Practice the tools they give you and see the changes in your life.
